I’m rereading the book The Compound Effect with a coaching group that I’m a member of (BACC). I suggested this book because I’ve read it before and totally love it because it’s completely in line with creating positive changes in your life.
⠀
In chapter 1, one of the things mentioned is to evaluate where in your life you are taking for granted – something that you had success with but are now slipping and it’s having a negative ripple effect.⠀
⠀
For me it’s walking. I was really good and consistent with taking daily walks before Corona happened back in early March. I would listen to inspirational audios and enjoy being outside with fresh air, nature and sunshine.⠀
⠀
Since stopping those daily walks, these have been the negative effects…⠀
⠀
– My energy level has decreased and I’m more tired throughout the day⠀
– I’ve put on weight from lack of movement⠀
– My eyes are strained from being on the computer more⠀
– I’ve felt less motivated⠀
– I’ve felt less connected to the outside world⠀
⠀
Wow – so crazy how one change in action can lead to so many other things!
⠀
I’m happy to say I started my morning walks again this month and I already feel so much better – more energy, more motivation and coming up with lots of creative biz ideas!
So now I challenge you to take a look at your life and see if there’s something you stopped doing that’s now having negative consequences. The first step is to be aware!⠀Here are some journal prompts to help you out.
Let’s Journal On It!
- What area in my life have I been slacking on?
- What specific activity/habit has worked in the past but I stopped doing?
- What have been the negative consequences?
- Why is it important to me to make a change?
- What small step can I commit to taking NOW that will get me out of this slump?
Let me know in the comments what you come up with!
I’m going live on Facebook and Instagram each Wednesday to discuss insights from each chapter. Here are the links from this week’s Chapter 1 discussion…

I love “The Compound Effect”. It should be required reading for high school students. I’ve just returned to morning journaling. My days are becoming more focused and less chaotic. Keep the blog posts coming, I really enjoy them.

I know – The Compound Effect is the best! Ahhh! It makes me so happy to hear you’re back to journaling and that you’re already feeling the positive effects! Yay!

The Headspace App for meditation has been an invaluable new habit which I began in January. I’d never been successful or found benefit with meditation before (it was BORING), but Andy’s instruction, balanced with silence, has helped me learn and experience how the daily “practice” of simply and gently refocusing for a few minutes each morning can inform the rest of interactions all day! At first I could only “stand it” for 3 minutes! This is a habit I plan to continue! Thanks for your great blog posts and book recommendation!

Hey Nancy! I def need to check out that app because I also haven’t really been into mediation even though I hear there are so many benefits to it. It’s inspiring to me to know you are really into it now and seeing benefits. Love the Compound Effect – I think you would really like it!
