Creatives!!
What projects are you finishing up before the new year?
Business? Personal? Creative?
I recently finished one of my creative goals – crocheting a holiday stocking. It was a big project for me because I only recently started to crochet – just learning a few of the stitches but never completed an actual project.
As I made my way through the project I realized there were certain steps I took that could easily be applied to any goal. Here’s what I did. See how you can apply them to whatever goal you’re working on!
1 – COMMITMENT & DESIRE: Start with a strong, full on commitment and desire for your goal. I KNEW I was going to complete it no matter what. I wanted to prove to myself that I could actually do it – and I knew it would feel so rewarding to finish it.
2 – START WITH THE END IN MIND: I was inspired by a crocheted holiday stocking project by designer Twinkie Chan that I saw on the creative website Creativebug. I love that site! As soon as I saw it I knew I had to try and make it. I saw the final project and knew what I was working towards. (I changed the colors though 🙂 )
Tip: Whatever your goal is, see if you can find a picture or visualize it. This is why I love vision boards!
3 – SET A DEADLINE: I knew I wanted to be done before XMAS Eve. With a deadline you set a container or framework for when you will accomplish your goal. It creates a sense of urgency otherwise it’ll just go on forever. Deadlines or Due Dates have always worked for me.
4 – BREAK IT DOWN INTO SMALL MANAGEABLE STEPS: Seeing a big project as a whole can feel overwhelming. Focus on one step at a time and don’t feel like you have to get it all done at once. For me, I worked on it when I could during the in between moments little by little. I started by working on the hexagons, then connected them all together, created a loop and then made a fabric liner! One step at a time!
5 – BATCH: There are 17 hexagons to this project but rather than doing one by one, I worked in batches by color.
It made it go a lot quicker than if I had to continually switch colors and stitches. Where can you batch in the projects you’re working on?
6 – MINDSET: – Deal with any limiting beliefs, fears or imposter syndrome that may be holding you back. I find journaling to be the best way to do this. Fortunately for me, with this project there was zero resistance or baggage to deal with.
7 – ACCOUNTABILITY: commit and hold yourself accountable and if that doesn’t work, tell someone else that will hold you accountable to your goals. I was able to keep myself accountable because I had a strong desire to finish it.
I also talked bout these steps in a video I created on YouTube. You can check it out here…
Completing this project and doing what I said I would do feels great! It’s giving me the motivation and confidence to continue to try new things and go after bigger goals in all areas of my life.
You can do whatever you set your mind to!
