Hey, fellow creatives!
Let’s discuss a topic that’s all too familiar for many of us: perfectionism. You know, that sneaky little voice in our heads that tells us nothing we do is ever good enough? Yeah, that one.
Keep reading for the abbreviated version but if you prefer listening or watching, you can check out my video on YouTube.
As creatives, perfectionism can be a bit of a double-edged sword. On one hand, it pushes us to strive for excellence and create our best work. But on the flip side, it can also be a real buzzkill, holding us back with unrealistic standards and the fear of not measuring up.
I’ve been teaching a variety of after school art classes and I’m noticing this “perfectionist syndrome” even in these young kids! It’s too much. It’s starting way too early! I try to encourage them instead to be present and enjoy the process of creativity. Same goes for you!
So, how do we keep our perfectionist tendencies in check and cultivate a mindset that’s more chill and forgiving? Here are a few thoughts:
- Embrace the Mess: Let’s face it, perfection is overrated. Embracing the imperfections in our work can actually make it more interesting and unique. So, don’t be afraid to let your creativity run wild and see where it takes you.
- Take the Pressure Off: Instead of putting so much pressure on ourselves to be perfect, let’s focus on progress over perfection. It’s more about the journey, not just the destination.
- Be Nice to Yourself: We’re our own worst critics, aren’t we? Let’s cut ourselves some slack and show ourselves the same kindness and understanding we’d show a friend. Because let’s be real, we’re doing the best we can, and that’s pretty amazing!
- Celebrate the Wins: No matter how small, every little win deserves a celebration. So, let’s give ourselves a pat on the back for all the hard work and creativity we pour into our projects.
Dealing with perfectionism is tough, but a change in mindset helps us embrace imperfections and enjoy the journey.
So, here’s to letting go of perfect and embracing perfectly imperfect!
And…now for one of my favorite quotes of all time…
Keep on creating!
