When you have a goal or a project that seems really big it’s hard to imagine it getting done. Your first reaction may be to slip into full blown overwhelm mode. That leads to procrastination and before you know it weeks, months and maybe even years have gone by and still no progress!
I was recently doing a zentangle mandala drawing class on Skillshare and when I first saw what we were going to draw it seemed really intimidating. How in the world was I going to draw that intricate design?
But guess what – the instructor broke it down into BABY STEPS and before I knew it my drawing was complete!
It literally started out with…
- draw a square
- draw a circle in the center of that square
- draw a leaf on each side of the circle
- draw a bigger leaf in the corners of the square
- and so on and so on
All really doable steps!!!
This is how it turned out… I have to say I’m proud of myself! 🙂 It may not be perfect, but it’s definitely progress! I know with each one I do it’ll just get better and better.
The same principles can apply to whatever it is you want to take on…
- Make a decision on what you desire
- Determine the final outcome (the goal)
- Stay committed
- Take BABY STEPS to get there!
Let’s say your goal is to create a website for your new art business. That may sound like a huge project but remember we’re breaking it down into tiny manageable steps.
Here’s what could you do…
- Decide which pages you’ll need to get started – Home, About, Contact and Gallery
- Write a bio for your About Page
- Find a photo of yourself to include on you About page
- Look through your work and choose a dozen of your favorites
- Scan or photograph your art
- Edit your photos
- Research web platforms
- and so on!
Keep breaking it down into small manageable steps and block out a set amount of time to work on it so you can stay focused. Work on one task at a time to keep the overwhelm to a minimum!
Each day it may not seem like you’ve gotten a lot done but by the end of the week (or month) when you look back you’ll be able to see all the progress you’ve made!
