I’ve been going to the San Gennaro Festival ever since I was a kid. It was always a favorite end of summer family activity. Back then I ate much differently than I do now. I would especially get excited to have zeppoles – those hot fried dough balls topped with powdered sugar. Yum!! I remember when they were about a dozen for a dollar. They’re probably at least a dollar EACH by now!
I wanted to continue the tradition with my girls and when they were younger I managed to get them to go a few times but they’ve lost interest in the past couple of years. They can’t deal with the crowds. Wimps!!!
Having to go alone wasn’t a deterrent. In fact it ended up being a perfect artist date!! I usually go at night but decided to try the afternoon this time thinking it wouldn’t be as crowded. Nope! Still the same!
The food choices are sooo limited for me at this festival now that I eat differently but there’s one thing I can’t give up…candy grapes!!! Each year I’m on a mission to find that vendor! It’s such a treat! Have you ever had these? They’re so much better than candy apples because the candy ratio is so much better. It’s my once a year candy splurge! ๐
While I’m not going to eat most of what’s there, I still enjoy seeing, smelling and watching everyone else devour all of the amazing food choices. Even though it’s crowded there’s a great energy about being around people so excited about food! It’s so NY!
The sausage and peppers sandwich especially smelled great but I don’t eat red meat anymore. Sooo.. I ordered a sausage and peppers sandwich – hold the sausage! ๐ The guy looked at me like I was nuts! I was hoping the flavor of the sausage would have gotten into the peppers and onions but it didn’t and it just wasn’t the same.
Aside from food I also found some non food vendors selling fun magnets and another selling crystals. I love crystals and ended up buying a few small ones along with a necklace. I’m still new to learning about them but I find it fascinating.
It was definitely a fun artist date!
