I’m so excited to introduce you to Ileana Torres! She’s been a super active member of my program Visualize To Materialize since the beginning of the year. I’ve been able to witness the growth on her creative journey, taking action on her goals, showing up each week with her updates and seeing how much progress she’s made. I HAD TO share her story!
Also since she’s local to me, we were able to do a personal brand photo shoot. Another way she was upleveling in her new business and taking her goals seriously. You’ll see images from the shoot scattered throughout the post.
Meet Ileana Torres…
Give us a brief summary of what you do in your professional career and business
I’m a Career Coach and Personal Stylist. I’ve been working with non-profits helping people from underserved groups find employment. In my business, I provide resume writing, interviewing prep, LinkedIn reviews, and other career development services. I also help working women improve their career success through personal style: updating wardrobes, improving personal style and image, etc.
Where does the interest in styling come from? Were you always interested in fashion?
I have always loved fashion, and I used to think I couldn’t make a living out of it. But part of my job as a Career Coach is helping my clients “dress for success” for job interviews, work, and other events. I see many people getting held back in their careers because of their style and presentation. Also, when a woman looks great, she’ll feel great. I want to help women look and feel their best. This year I began offering Personal Styling as a stand-alone service.
What made you take the leap to start your own creative business?
As much as I like serving others at non-profit organizations, there are always limitations to what I can do to help a client because financial reasons, the way these programs are set up, or just time constraints. There’s only so much you can do in that setting. Having my own business gives me freedom and flexibility, and I can offer clients so much more when I’m working for myself and not someone else.
What tips do you have for other women who have full time jobs but also have a desire to start their own creative business?
Don’t drag your feet! Just do it! Learn all you can about starting a business. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. Also, you need to put in the time. There are times when you’ll be too tired from your regular 9 – 5 to work on your business but you need to remember why you wanted to start your business in the first place. That’s what will give you the motivation. Also, keep in mind that there are people way less talented than you doing what you want to do and being successful at it. The difference is that they’re out there making the effort while you’re busy doubting yourself.
What’s an easy-to-implement personal styling tip you can give to working women?
Trends come and go and fashion changes. However, if you stick to the classics, you will always look chic and stylish. Also, for most women, clothes won’t fit perfectly off the rack, so it’s always a good idea to get your clothes tailored for the best fit possible, i.e. skirt waists taken in, pants hemmed, sleeves shortened, etc.
