One of the best decisions I made back in February 2018 was to join out-of-the-box entrepreneur Jesse Itzler’s Build Your Life Resume program.
I had been following him and his wife Sara Blakely (SPANX creator) on Instagram and loved their energy, humor and authenticity. Jesse seemed so fun (and a bit cray cray!) and I felt like I needed more of that in my own life.
When he decided to create a new program – Build Your Life Resume (BYLR), I jumped in right away – not really even knowing exactly what it was going to be about!!
I’m so grateful to be one of the original members along with a group of amazing individuals that also decided to take the plunge. I’m in a bunch of different groups – both paid and unpaid but it wasn’t until I found this one that it felt like home. I found my tribe – my people!!!
If you’re in business or just looking to expand your horizons, I highly suggest you find groups to join until you find the right one where it feels like a perfect match. Not every group is for everyone and each group has it’s own vibe and personality. You’ll just know in your gut when you’ve found the right one.
This group was special to me right from the beginning. When I got diagnosed with HPV Throat Cancer back in March 2018, I decided not to tell many people – not even my mom (you can read the whole story here) but I DID feel compelled to share what was going on with this group. It was a safe environment yet still new so I knew I didn’t have to worry about them worrying about me – just supportive of me and my decisions.
The biggest takeaway and mindset shift that I’ve gotten from this past year is I started saying YES to me and my desires and creating new experiences.
At times my family and friends thought I was nuts because these things seemed like they came out of nowhere…
- attending a sleep-away camp for adults by myself and volunteering to be in a group talent show singing and dancing
- flying to Atlanta for an overnight trip
- signing up for 10 weeks of piano lessons
- donating my car (and still haven’t bought a new one)
- walking home over and hour and a half from the NY Botanical Gardens instead of taking an Uber
- going back to Atlanta for a retreat and staying in a house with 20+ people I mostly only knew from our Facebook group
- booking a family vacation to Las Vegas for Spring Break
In my business life I…
- started embracing myself more as an artist and not just a photographer
- opened an online print shop to sell my art
- designed cards with my sketches
- participated in an art show (more to come!)
- working with more mentoring clients
- took a variety of classes related to art business
- read more books than ever before
- taught a variety of in person classes
- said NO to projects I knew weren’t a good fit
- said YES to projects that took me out of my comfort zone
Just because we have kids and are we’re well into our adult years doesn’t mean we have to stop learning and growing and EXPERIENCING everything life has to offer!!
Find your tribe and love them hard! Surround yourself with people that will encourage you and take you out of your comfort zone to create your best possible life!
What memorable experiences have you created this year?
